Mayoh Architects were engaged to develop a Boarding Master Plan for The King’s School, which included planned upgrades to four existing boarding houses on the campus. Part of the brief was to establish a new style of architecture to distinguish the Boarding Precinct from the Academic Precinct, whilst ensuring consistency with the existing architecture of the campus. All four of the Boarding Houses have now been completed in line with the Master Plan.

The designs follows a symmetrical composition with a hierarchical arrangement of the building volumetrics to provide a clear sense of entry, tradition & history. A key challenge was designing around the existing site constraints which included the sloping topography and the proximity of existing buildings, an access road and bush fire prone land. The use of materials such as precast concrete panels, exposed brick walls, terracotta columns and hardwood ensured cohesion with the rest of the campus.

The buildings have been designed to both be stately and grand in keeping with the rest of the campus as well as warm and inviting for the students who call these buildings their homes whilst at school.
